about

This 2nd release by Saronde features vocals from Kenyan musicians Idd Aziz and Blinky Bill.

The words in this song encourage people travelling for freedom, love and art. The featured field recording made by Hugh Tracey in 1950 comes from a village near Mombassa and is sung in the Mijikenda language and translates – “May this journey bring blessings”.

When Saronde played their Kilamu demo to multi-talented singer and musician Idd Aziz, Idd immediately recognised the sample originated from a village near where he grew up on the east coast and came up with a chorus reflecting the sentiment, bidding the ancestors guidance on his journey.

Blinky Bill is a globetrotting singer and beatmaker hailing from Nairobi. He raps about the challenges that travellers face in today’s politically polarised world. This song represents a powerful expression of maintaining positivity and dignity in the face of adversity on the road.
